ISLAMABAD: Parliamentary committee formed to draft Terms of References (ToRs) for investigations into the Panama Papers’ allegations have to take extension from the National Assembly as it was formed on May 23 for 14 days which expire today.
Even after five sittings and cumbersome discussions, the TORs committee could not bring the government and the opposition on the same page. Both sides have rejected each other’s proposed TORs and the deadlock had continued. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Aitzaz Ahsan and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi have repeatedly spoken to the media expressing the opposition’s firm resolve no to step back from any core issue that they have proposed. The government also continues to push its own terms and this had resulted in a deadlock making five sessions of the committee fruitless.
Now, the ToRs committee would have to ask for extension if it wishes to continue the discussions and hopes to achieve the unanimous verdict of the government and opposition.
